Hoya: The Eyeglass Company That Gates EUV
Every EUV chip begins as a pattern on a mask, and every EUV mask begins as a blank - forty-plus atomically smooth mirror layers on glass that must be perfect, because one defect repeats onto every die of every wafer. Hoya, known to consumers for eyeglass lenses, dominates that supply with exactly one rival - and holds a second quiet monopoly in the glass under the world's hard drives.

1Why an EUV mask is a mirror
Extreme-ultraviolet light at 13.5nm is absorbed by everything, including glass and air. So EUV masks do not transmit light - they reflect it, off a Bragg mirror of forty-plus alternating molybdenum and silicon layers, each a few nanometres thick, deposited on ultra-low-expansion glass polished to atomic smoothness. That undecorated mirror is the mask blank.
The specification is brutal in one particular way: a printable defect in the blank does not ruin one chip - it ruins the same die position on every wafer the mask ever prints. Blank defectivity is therefore the closest thing lithography has to an unforgivable sin.
2Two companies on earth
Hoya is the dominant supplier of EUV mask blanks; AGC (Asahi Glass) is the only alternative at scale. The barrier is not capital but accumulated yield: decades of glass metrology, polishing and defect inspection that began in Hoya's case with camera filters and eyeglass lenses. Buyers are the captive mask shops of TSMC, Samsung and Intel, and merchant mask makers - Photronics (PLAB) being the US-listed one.
It is worth saying plainly: ASML's monopoly on EUV scanners is famous. The duopoly one layer beneath it is not, and it is no less binding.
3The ecosystem tell: Lasertec
The only tools that inspect EUV blanks and masks at the actinic wavelength - with EUV light itself, seeing what the scanner will see - come from a single further Japanese company, Lasertec. A monopoly inspecting a duopoly feeding a monopoly: the EUV mask chain is the thinnest corridor in all of semiconductor manufacturing, and almost none of it is household knowledge.
This chain is why our bottlenecks board scores lithography's unpriced layers the way it does. The consensus trade is the scanner; the fragility is spread across suppliers most screens have never listed.
4The second monopoly in the same company
Hoya's other quiet dominance is glass substrates for high-capacity hard drives - the platters inside the nearline drives hyperscalers buy by the exabyte. As drives moved from aluminium to glass at higher capacities, Hoya's share became commanding. Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate (STX) are the direct buyers; every AI data-centre cold-storage buildout touches it.
One company, then, sits beneath both AI compute (via the masks that print the chips) and AI storage (via the platters that hold the data) - and is still described in consumer press as an eyewear firm.
5Risk geometry and the investable surface
Production is concentrated in Japan, inside the same seismic geography our world-risk board watches for fabs - a supplier-tier exposure the board does not yet map, and should. Customer concentration cuts both ways: a handful of buyers, but buyers who cannot leave.
Hoya trades in Tokyo (7741) with an OTC ADR (HOCPY); the merchant-mask route is Photronics (PLAB); the dependents are the leading-edge trio and everyone who buys their output. As with the rest of this series: a map of where the chain is narrow, not a recommendation to stand on it.

- Exact blank market shares - unpublished; trade estimates cluster around two-thirds-plus for Hoya but vary.
- Blank defectivity yields - the most closely held number in the chain.
- Hoya's HDD-glass share precisely - commanding by all accounts, undisclosed in detail.
